Consumer Protection Unit at Charles Telfair Institute

21 October 2014

During October, the Faculty of Accounting, Finance & Law invited representatives from the Consumer Protection Unit (CPU) and the Association des Consommateurs de L'Ile Maurice (ACIM) for a presentation to CTI Business Law students studying Consumer Protection Law this semester.

Mr Amar Deep Seetohul and his colleague from the CPU elaborated on the Mauritian legal framework for consumer protection, the role of the CPU and the proposed future changes to the existing laws. The students also had the opportunity to learn that the CPU investigates on all alleged breaches and the potential legal consequences.

Mr Jayen Chellum from ACIM discussed next the role of the ACIM and the various challenges and loopholes in the existing legal framework. He provided various insights into the scope of consumer protection and policy-making, helping the students realize how overarching the concept of consumer protection actually is and how it directly or indirectly impacts on many other areas that most of us are unaware of.
